let me preface with: i know a lot of people post music to their blogs… and much of the time, no one listens to it. i’m one of the rarities in that i do play the songs people post, and i listen to a song in its entirety. to be honest, i could give a shit if you listen to the song. generally, this blog is for my own enjoyment — a place where i can post things of interest and revisit them on occasion.
in the event you choose to listen:
today, i’m posting a tune from my favorite band. more specifically, it’s one of the band member’s solos. while it’s not my favorite record from this band, it’s still great. additionally, it sorta fits my mood, and i’ve had it on repeat all night. [yes, i can put a song on repeat and listen to it for days… yes, ONE song for days at a time.]
aside from posting it for having had this song on repeat all night, i’ll do my best to explain what’s been drawing me to it. [not in relation to my mood, simply in relation to why it sounds good to my ears.]
it’s mellow, melodramatic, and piano-heavy. i love the layering within the song. it’s simple, but it really serves the song well. the pounding piano carries the melody along with his no-frills voice. he’s not over-singing it, and i find that appealing. [you can tell the piano player is naturally a drummer.] with the quick snap of the drums, i find walking the tightrope becomes a death march. haunting, subtle ”ahh”s and “ooo”s underneath the bridge add another element, really giving the song a rich, FULL sound. the piece isn’t too cluttered; just piano, drums, and a voice — perfection.
[yes, i’m purposely not mentioning the singer, nor his band.]
“the walk”
well, deep in a wood
where nothing is seen
a tightrope is strung to his heel
and high on the walk
he’s down on one knee
he waits for the slow of the breeze
oh, wow
look at him now on his feet
high, up in the sky
and every moment extends endlessly
it feels as though time isn’t moving
and every second, hold breath not to breathe
and watch as he moves to the beat
well, down on the floor
i watch from my seat
i watch as he sways with the trees
and slowly he moves, but so elegantly
i’m all on the edge of my seat
on the tightrope everything’s bare
and all that there is is from here to there
on the tightrope the goal is quite clear
and don’t lose yourself in your…
fear
fear, whoa
everyone waits on a walk
and some are long and some small
but all of them tall
and everyone must make a choice
will i go for it all, and possibly fall?
the tightrope is thin
i could possibly win on the walk
well, high on the walk
the tightrope it bends
and nobody knows where it ends
to win or to lose, you’re all on your own
‘cuz everyone must be alone
on the tightrope everything’s bare
and all that there is is from here to there
on the tightrope the goal is quite clear
and don’t lose yourself in your
fear
fear, whoa
fear
fear, no
